“If only I earned more, then I would be able to save more…”

“If only I earned more, I would have a better lifestyle…”

“If only I earned more, I would be happier…”

Safe to say, everybody reading this will have had at least one of these thoughts at some point in their life, young or old, jokingly or not. As human beings, we have the tendency to postpone our happiness until we get a better paying job, a nicer car, or until we lose weight, thinking that we can only be happy until we have reached our goal and not in the interim.

This attitude can seep into every aspect of our lives, including the ways that we arrange our financial affairs. It can be tempting to put off saving until after we’ve paid for our holiday or our extension, or perhaps we might wait until we receive a bonus to deposit into a savings account…and so the list continues. Because of the difficulty to save in these troubled economic times, many genuinely wonder how to go about doing it. If this sounds like you, we’d like give you some of our top tips to save even when on a tight budget:

A goal without a plan is just a wish – so if you’ve decided that you want to save more, stop and ask yourself:
How much do I want to save?
    How often should I save?
How will I adjust my monthly budget accordingly?
You’ve created your plan – what next? Now you need to decide where you will deposit your savings. At Highland Communities Credit Union, all savings deposited are used to give out loans to other Credit Union members – so you can be sure that your cash is being used to the benefit of the community and is protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
Once you’ve decided where to deposit your money, you will need to set up your payment method. We would recommend setting up a standing order or depositing it through payroll deduction, therefore you will be less likely to spend the money you are wanting to save.
